Lesson Plan : The Earth and its Moon
Teacher Name: | Dvorak |
Grade: | Grade 4 |
Subject: | Science |
Topic: | The planet Earth, rotation on Earth's axis, the moon and its cycles |
Content: | Discuss the planet Earth. Review axis and how the Earth rotates on its axis. Discuss the moon and what causes different phases of the moon (full, new, etc.) |
Goals: | Students will understand that the Earth rotates once each day on its axis, this is cause of night and day. Earth's tilt on its axis is responsible for the seasons. Students will understand that the Earth is orbiting the sun, the moon is orbiting the Earth, and the position of the Earth and moon in relation to the Sun is the cause of the different phases of the moon. |
Objectives: | SC.E.1.2.1 The student knows that the tilt of the Earth causes the change of seasons, lenght of day, and the amount of energy available. SC.E.1.2.2 The student knows that the combination of the Earth's movement and the Moon's orbit of the Earth is responsible for the phases of the moon. |
Materials: | Science Textbook Unit D pp. 60 - 62 Planet presentation worksheet |
Introduction: | Review yesterday's material. Remind students what we learned about the Earth and how it rotates on axis. |
Development: | Read pp. 60 - 62 in textbook. Discuss why we have day and night on Earth, why we have seasons on Earth. Discuss how Earth has one moon that orbits around it, how rotation and orbit of Earth and Moon cause different parts of the Moon to be visible to us - causing different phases of the moon. |
