Lesson Plan : Transfer of Heat
Teacher Name: | Miss. Sundquist |
Grade: | Grade 6 |
Subject: | Science |
Topic: | Transfer of Heat |
Content: | How energy is transferred though heat. How materials are used to control the transfer of energy through heat. The teacher will introduce the terms conduction, insulators, convection and radiation. |
Goals: | Students will be able to define conduction, insulators, convection and radiation. Students will be able to recognize good conductors and insulators. |
Objectives: | Knowledge of transfer of energy through heat by observing the lab activity explore conduction. |
Materials: | Smartboard, 2 beakers, hot water, cold water, 2 thermometers, and stopwatch. |
Introduction: | The teacher will display on the smartboard a picture of an amore and a long coat. The students are to answer what one will you wear if it is cold outside. Explain. |
Development: | The teacher will model a lab activity. The teacher will: 1. Fill the larger beaker halfway with hot tap water. Fill the small beaker halfway with cold water. Place a thermometer in each beaker. 2. Without removing the water in either beaker, place the small beaker inside the large beaker. Record the temperature in each beaker every 30 seconds for 2 minutes. The teacher will ask the students: a.) How did the water temperature in each beaker change? b.)In which direction did energy flow? How do you know? |
Practice: | The students will turn to their shoulder buddy and read the definitions. |
Accommodations: | While the students are working independently the teacher will walk over to see if the students are on task or if they need assistance. |
Checking For Understanding: | As the students are working independently the teacher will be walking around the classroom conducting an informal assessment. |
Closure: | The teacher and students will review the new vocabulary and questions. |
Evaluation: | As the students are working independently the teacher will be walking around the classroom conducting an informal assessment. |
