Lesson Plan : What's The Periodic Table?

Teacher Name:
 Cathy Messenger
Grade:
 Grade 11-12
Subject:
 Science

Topic:
Chemistry - Introduction to the Periodic Table of the Elements
Content:
To investigate the Periodic Table its organization and the characteristics of the elements in the nine groups listed. Use internet resources and presentation software (PowerPoint) to summarize and present key information. California State Content Standards for Chemistry 1a-f (Atomic and Molecular Structure). ISTE Standards: Routinely and efficiently use online information resources to meet needs for collaboration and research. Collaborate with peers to contribute to a content-related knowledge base by using technology to compile, synthesize, produce and disseminate information.
Goals:
SWBAT describe the physical properties and practical use information about one of the following Element Groups: Alkali Metals, Alkaline Earth Metals, Transition Metals, Other Metals, Metalloids, Non-Metals, Halogens, Noble Gases, Rare Earth Elements.
Objectives:
Students will use website resources to work collaboratively in groups of 2-3 to prepare a 3 slide PowerPoint presentation on one of nine Element Groups from the Periodic Table. These lesson will require two 50 minute class periods to complete.
Materials:
Computer Lab with internet access and PowerPoint software.
Introduction:
At prior class meeting introduce Periodic table and its organization. Describe lesson for next time (10 minutes). Assign appropriate chapter reading as homework. Meet in Computer lab on day of lesson.
Development:
Describe assignment. Students work in groups to investigate their assigned element group online (www.chemicalelements.com). Each group is to list the elements in their assigned group and the atomic number range (slide 1); the physical characteristics of their group, including reactivity (electrons in outer shell) and natural physical state (slide 2); and at least 3 unique characteristics of their element group, including some practical uses for their elements (slide 3). (5-10 minutes)
Practice:
Students begin research, synthesize and summarize information using PowerPoint. When complete, students print out notes copies to turn in to teacher. Presentations will be at the beginning of the next class period.(40 minutes)
Accommodations:

Checking For Understanding:
Students present PowerPoint slides to class. All students to take notes. Use attached Rubric to evaluate student performance. Nine presentations, 5 minutes each (45 minutes)
Closure:
Review information, highlighting everyday uses of elements and organization of the Periodic Table. (5 minutes)
Evaluation:
