Lesson Plan : Inverse Functions
Teacher Name: | Mr. Cochran |
Grade: | Grade 9-10 |
Subject: | Math |
Topic: | California Standard (24): Students solve problems involving functional concepts, such as composition, defining the inverse function and performing arithmetic operations on functions. |
Content: | Inverse Functions: Vocabulary Inverse relation - Inverse function - |
Goals: | Goal #1 - Find Inverse of linear functions. Goal #2 - Find Inverse of nonlinear functions. |
Objectives: | Have students be able to describe the steps for finding the inverse of a relation. |
Materials: | Overhead projector, graphing calculator, and Smart Board. |
Introduction: | Lesson Opener Activity. Using transparency 7-4 and have students match each composition of functions on the left with a simplified expression on the right to reveal something you might say while riding a roller coaster. |
Development: | Finding an Inverse Relation. Find an equation for the inverse of the relation y = 3x - 1. Using notetaking worksheet along with the Smart Board for student assistance. |
Practice: | Verifying Inverse Functions. Verify the inverse function of y = 3x - 1. |
Accommodations: | Use the graphing calculator to show inverse relationships. |
Checking For Understanding: | Use problems 1-3 of the student notetaking worksheet to allow checking for understanding inverse functions. |
Closure: | Question to students: Describe the steps for finding the inverse of a relation. |
Evaluation: | Day after the lesson. Homework quiz on inverse relations. |
Teacher Reflections: | Mr. Cochran and Mr. Smith will reflect on todays lesson. |
