Goals:

Objectives:
 The learner will be able to understand the meaning of zero.
Materials:
 Chalkboard, Chalk, Math counting manipulatives
Introduction:
 The teacher will begin by writing the number 0 on the chalkboard. The teacher will ask if anyone knows what it means. The teacher will explain to the students that zero means nothing. The teacher will ask three students to stand in a line. The teacher will ask how many students are in the line. She will write the number 3 on the board. One student will sit down and the teacher will ask how many students are in line. She will write 2 on the board. One student will sit down and the teacher will ask how many students are in line. She will write 1 on the board. The last student will sit down and the teacher will ask the students how many are in line now. The teacher will write 0 on the board. The teacher will make sure students understand it is 0 because there are no more students left. (10 minutes)
Development:
 The teacher will have the students sit in a circle on the carpet. The teacher will review counting 1-9 with the students. The teacher will explain that the students will be counting various objects on the carpet. (2 minutes)
Practice:
 The teacher will place a cup of 3 monkeys in the middle of the circle. The teacher will ask the students how many monkeys are there. The teacher will then take the monkeys away and ask how many there are now. The teacher will ask students why there is zero. The teacher will review by putting various numbers of items in the middle of the circle for students to count. The teacher will ask different students how many there are. (10 minutes)
Accommodations:
 Students will have one on one time if needed. The teacher will read the student the problems.
Checking For Understanding:
 Student will be assessed on the problems they completed in their book. If students have difficulty with the task, the teacher will work with students in a small group setting.
Closure:
 Students will be instructed to turn in their pages to the teacher when they are done. (5 minutes)
Evaluation:
 Students will be assessed on their completion of page 19. The teacher will ensure the student circles the correct number of pigs on each question.
