Lesson Plan : Rational Exponents

Teacher Name:
 Emily Werner
Grade:
 Grade 11-12
Subject:
 Math

Topic:
 Rational Exponents
Content:
rational exponents, radicals, perfect squares and cubes, multiplying radicals, properties of exponents,
Goals:
Show students what rational exponents are, and their relationship to radical expressions. To show students how to convert between radicals and rational exponents. To show students how to simplify expressions that contain rational exponents.
Objectives:
 1) Students learn what rational exponents are, and their relationship to radical expressions 2) Students learn how to convert between radical expressions and rational exponents 3) Students learn properties of rational exponents, and how they're similar to properties of exponents 4) Students practice simplifying expressions that contain rational exponents
Materials:
overhead, overhead markers, transparencies, whiteboard, whiteboard markers, overhead calculator
Introduction:
Teacher introduces the lessons with an informal definition of rational exponents. Teacher shows students how to write expression that have rational exponents with radicals. Teacher then gives a more formal definition of rational exponents. Students then learn how to convert between radicals and rational exponents.
Development:
Students learn properties of rational exponents, and practice using the different properties in simplifying expressions
Practice:
Teacher gives a number of examples that show students how to do each of the different operations.
Accommodations:
different colors, verbal and visual directions and explanations
Checking For Understanding:
Teacher pauses periodically throughout the notes to gauge student understanding. Teacher has students do parts of examples individually and check their answers with their group members.
Closure:
Teacher gives students the homework assignment, and encourages them to try every problem.
Evaluation:
