Introduction: | Ask students to take out their Math textbook and open it on the page about palindromes. Elicit from the students if they know anything about palindromes or heard about the word in their classes. Write one number on the board. Ask them to read the number forward and backward. |
Development: | Explain to students the term palindrome. Anchor the students' understanding by identifying the palindromes provided in the text and providing examples of palindromes. Work students through the steps for creating palindromes. |
Practice: | Board work activity: Ask one student from each group to come to the board. They will make a palindrome from a given number. The student who will finish first will get a point. Call for 3-4 more students. |
Accommodations: | If they don't finish, they may finish at ahome. Work will students individually or partner students who are having difficulty. |
Checking For Understanding: | Walk around the room and check for understanding as the students work independently. |
Closure: | For the last 5 - 10 minutes, review the procedure for making a palindrome. Collect their notebooks for marking. |
Evaluation: | Observation during class as teacher walked around the room. Accuracy of student work. Student attentiveness to the lesson. |
