Lesson Plan : Making Fairies

Teacher Name:
 E. Rowan
Grade:
 Grade 6
Subject:
 Arts and Crafts

Topic:
 Creative Development - Christmas
Content:
Making Fairies to place on the top of Christmas Trees.
Goals:
Make a three-dimensional structure Understand that media can be combined (Working towards the Early Learning Goals for exploring media and materials - Foundation Stage Creative Development)
Objectives:
For everybody to create and decorate a Fairy For everybody to enjoy the activity For everybody to show creativity in the decoration of their fairy.
Materials:
Paper plates, circles of plain card (pre-cut with a cut along the radius), sequins, scraps of shiny paper, felt tips, make up sponges (for the faces), doileys.
Introduction:
I will help the children to tape together the circle of card so that it forms a cone shape. They will then be presented with the wings and decoration to add on themselves with help from me if necessary.
Development:
I will have one or two fairies already made up as models for what they are going to make. This should be particularly useful for children who have communication difficulties/impairments
Practice:
The children will stick the decorations onto the fairies showing their own creativity. I will only intervene when necessary, for example if the child is pouring glue onto the floor.
Accommodations:
Some children will need more support than others during this activity and I will accommodate these needs to the best of my ability. For example, I may need to adjust the furniture, or I may need to help the child to place decorations onto the glued areas.
Checking For Understanding:
I will show the child the completed fairy at the end of the activity and give them praise for what they have achieved.
Closure:
Each child can have a go at putting their fairy on the Christmas Tree. When the fairies are dry, some will be displayed in the hall.
Evaluation:
All the children in the group created a fairy and seemed to really enjoy the activity. I would definitely do this activity again. The best parts of it, I feel, were firstly the fact that the children were given so much room for creativity, and also that the fairy was a simple template, with which they couldn't go "wrong". It was enjoyable for children of all abilities. Next time I do this activity, I will stick the circles into cone shapes in advance as this proved to be time consuming and uninteresting for most children.
Teacher Reflections:
The students really enjoyed this lesson. I would do it again.
