Goals: | The goal is for students to learn grammar, responsibility, time management and use creative writing skills. |
Objectives: | 1. Students will obtain information on the innerworkings of a professional magazine and apply it to their own responsibility(ies) to present themselves as professional writers. 2. Students will produce their own magazine creation, complete with theme, graphics, articles, and general magazine content makeup, modeled after current magazines. 3. Students will submit 5 articles to other student magazines, with no more than two articles to the same magazine. |
Materials: | Computers Computer layout software Handouts for professional magazine information Graphic organizers List of randomly picked groups (except grammar "specialist" and creative personality.) Red-eye grammar test Creative writing worksheet |
Introduction: | 1. Bring in Magazine editing/story boards to set around the classroom the week before beginning unit 2. Red-eye grammar test early to mid week before starting unit. 3. Creative writing worksheet mid to late week before unit. 4. Description of unit and how it will work 5. Breaking of students into groups |
Development: | Students will be provided with examples of finished products. Students will also have access to current popular magazines to use as models. |
Practice: | First activity will be a grammar test to ascertain knowledge. The next activity will be a creative writing lesson to ascertain creative ability. Students will then be broken into random groups with exception of the students who excel in creativity and grammar. These students will be broken up to give each group someone strong in these areas. |

Checking For Understanding: | Assessment will be based upon deadlines met on time or not. They will also be assessed by peers chosen as "editors" and by the teacher as an editor before the article goes to print. |
