 Novel: Kissing Doorknobs by Terry Spencer-Hesser
Goals:
 Student will increase listening and comprehension skills
Objectives:
 Student will explain each chapter [orally or written] with 80% accuracy. Student will increase word sight identification skills with 75% accuracy. Students will improve dictionary use skills with 80% accuracy.
Materials:
 Novel: Kissing Doorknobs/Terry Spencer-Hesser, Worksheets/handouts, Highliters, and bookmarks
Introduction:
 Teacher will explain Obsessive Compulsive Disorder [OCD] KWL-orally, Teacher will read excerpts from other students that have read the book.
Development:
 Teacher will have students recall the movie 'As Good as it Gets' - with Jack Nickolson. Teach will talk about other mental problems that many people have. Teacher will explain that the author, Terry Spencer-Hesser actually suffered from OCD.
Practice:
 Word Search Activity, Guided reading and discussions
Accommodations:
 Teacher reads aloud and discusses each chapter. Teacher uses Bingo game, and word activities to reinforce vocabulary skills. Teacher will have students highlite the vocabulary words for each chapter using a waterproof marker.
Checking For Understanding:
 A quiz will be given after each chapter. Teacher will check for understanding by orally quizzing individual students. Teacher will review students written or oral summary as an assessment tool.
Closure:
 There will be a series of videos related to OCD (As Good As It Gets, and the Autobiography of Howard Hughes) There will be an open book final examination including all chapters.
Evaluation:
 Class participation, completion of worksheets/handouts, Final Examination grades.
