Lesson Plan : THE GAK

Teacher Name:
 Judith Sagalovsky
Grade:
 Grade 1
Subject:
 Language Arts

Topic:
 Making Gak (EDITED)
Content:
Science/Language Art/ Math/ Music /Social Studies/Reading/Writing Key vocabulary: sticky, elastic, liquid, solid, matter, texture, fun
Goals:
Enhance the curiosity in children about the state of matter. Make children wonder about what other subtance has same characteristic of GAK and how they can use it. Relieve stress and establish a great association between Science, Language Art, Music, Social Studies and Reading, Writing and Math. Increase fine and gross motor skills. Observe and internalize concepts of the different States of matter. Visualize a change process. Identify physcial characteristics of the matter (color, shape, odor, texture). Develop new vocabulary. Identify and live the scientific process ( hypothesis, recollection of data, comprobation and conclusion). Have fun.
Objectives:
Given materials and information on states of matter, students will use the worksheet as a guide to make GAK, noting what they observed before, during and after performing the experiment.
Materials:
White glue (Elmer) Food coloring Droppers Bowl / container Popsicle stick to stir Plastic bag (storing the GAK) Starch liquid. Measuring cup Camera Worksheet for notes/ data/ information/ (Template) Worksheet to evaluate (individual/ group/ class/ activity) Story/ book/ pencil/erase/ stapler/ Globe Worksheet with information (Who made the first GAK) Journal notebook
Introduction:
Brainstorm about states of matter Group discussion about physical characteristic of the matter. Review safety rules to follow in science class. Use the elastic little man and sticy frog (From party store)as examples to display. Use a KWL CHART to determine prior knowledge.
Development:
Put all materials required for the experiment on the table. Show one by one (materials) to students and named them. Measure 1cup of glue and verted it on the bowl add three food coloring drops into the glue. stir and add slowly the startch liquid to the mix. manipulate the Gak. Take notes: observation and comments before, during and after the experiment. Follow the worksheet questions.
Practice:
Give the guide to students (steps to follow), and the worksheet to complete before, during and after the experiment. Question children during their experimentation. What is the color, odor, texture of the glue? How does it feel? How many cups of glue do you need? starch liquid? how many drops? what happen when the food coloring makes contact with the glue/ and when the starch liquid mixes with the glue?
Accommodations:
Students will work in groups of 4. Establish 4 different captains and describe their jobs before the experiment. Students need to fill up their individual, group, class experiment's evaluation.
Checking For Understanding:
Whole group share their discoveries, conclusion. The teacher writes those on board so students can write them in their own journal. Informal evaluation. Use cooperative learning structures.
Closure:
Clap for everyone in the class. Fill up the mind map about GAK. Set the assignment for next class. Select two questions and write a paragraph about them. Where can you see the GAK characteristics? How we can use the GAK? How do you feel after this experiment? What do you like and dislike about this experiment?
Evaluation:
Worksheet assigned to the students before, during and after the experiment. Evaluation by the students about themselves, group, class and experiment. Participation, report and journals. Informal assessement give by the teacher( follow rules, share information, clean the area, work cooperatively, etc.)
Teacher Reflections:
Did the students find this experiment interesting? Did students participate fully? What do I think was successful about this lesson? How will I follow up? How does this apply to the students' everyday life?
