 Reading and interpreting the novel Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate De Camillo.
Content:
 Students will read the novel Because of Winn Dixie, a literature selection. vocabulary: preacher, unique, ghosts, lozenge, orphan, sermon, potluck, howl, holler, knuckle, mosquito
Goals:
 Students will analyze and apply knowledge of the structure and elements of fiction and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding. Students will identify personality traits of characters and the tthoughts, words and actions that reveal their personalities. Students will identify the elements of fiction-problem, solution, character and setting. Analyze how major events lead from problem to solution.
Objectives:
 Students will summarize events and actions in the chapters according to plot, theme, character, setting. Students will compare and contrast two unlike characters from the story on a graphic organizer. Students will share the details of their findings with a partner.
Materials:
 Graphic organizers. copies of the reading book Winn-Dixie. Bingo Game Audio tape. vocabulary word, journal response pages.
Introduction:
 Students will be asked to think of a habit or a problem that each might have, that causes or has caused them to get into trouble often. A few students will be asked to volunteer their stories. This si a lead in to the chapters where a character has to deal with problems that have caused trouble for them and the people they know.
Development:
 Students will be asked to keep this idea of problems or ' ghosts' in mind as they begin to listen to the audio tape. Students will be asked to isten to a preview of the questions they wille required to answer when the chapter(s) have finished.
Practice:
 Students will answer oral questions at various points during the tape presentation to check for attention to the story and for comprehension of the events in the story.
Accommodations:
 Students will be given assistance in the form of key words on the board, concept mapping prior to writing if necessary. Examples of the character map will be put up on the board and students will be walked through a how-to of completing it. The maps can be finished for homework or the next day if there is insufficient for these tasks.
Checking For Understanding:
 Students will be called upon to share their written responses to the chapter questions with the class by reading their answers to specific questions.
Closure:
 Bring students back together as a group and have each student share something that they have enjoyed or learned from the story Because of Winn-Dixe so far. During a related period students could play Winn-Dixe Bingo a summative activity that matches story characters, vocabulary and events to specific clues on a Bingo Mat.
Evaluation:
 Student responses will be grade according to a rubric for particpation, attention and written work. Students will be given points for sharing their responses and these accumulate toward class prizes. Students will be also be observed and assessed on how well they work together as partners as part of the Winn- Dixie message isearning to accept other people's differences.
