Introduction: | Word Wall Vocabulary words for the unit |
Development: | Split into teams of 2. Explain rules of game. This is football. Each correct question moves the team 10 yards down the field. Progression into the touchdown area is a touchdown of 7 points. The question is only for that particular student in that row. If the student answers correctly, the team progresses forward down the field. If the team does not know the answer to the question, he/she may call a 30 second timeout. During this time, the student has the opportunity to conference with the rest of the team about the correct answer. When the 30 second buzzer rings, the student must provide me with an answer. If the answer is correct, again the team progresses down the field. The only time that a team may conference together is during a timeout called, and a team only has 3 of those. If an answer is shouted out by a teammate, that is an interception, and possession goes directly to the other team. If the student answering the question misses the question, the other team has the opportunity to recover "the fumble" by answering the question correctly. No timeouts can be called during a fumble recovery. |
Practice: | Students call coin toss. The winning group of the coin toss will decide to receive the first question or kick it away to the other team. |
Accommodations: | Students are not allowed to use their textbooks/notes for this review because it is to assess what they do and do not know; however, students are allowed to have out a sheet of notebook paper and writing utensil to write down the questions asked and the correct answers given to be sure that they have a useful study guide that night for the test. |
Checking For Understanding: | I am checking for understanding with each question asked and answered. I also listen to the group discussions during timeouts called. |
Closure: | The winning team with the most points at the end of the game receives 5 bonus points on tomorrow's test. |
Evaluation: | I am checking for understanding with each question asked and answered. I also listen to the group discussions during timeouts called. |
Teacher Reflections: | This is an excellent lesson that works because the students will work very hard to get bonus points for their test. They have a lot of fun with this. The only problem I ever seem to have is an administrator telling me to shut the door when we do fun activities such as these. |
