Introduction: | So far we learned that there are five elements of short stories:setting, plot, characters, conflict, and theme. Last week we learned how to diagram the plot of the short story "The Necklace" and how the cause and effect of certain events move the plot forward. Today we are going to learn about Conflict and how the internal and/or external conflicts of the characters can help us predict the outcome of a story. To strengthen our writing it is important that we choose more precise verbs. We will learn to recognize weak verbs and replace them with stronger ones. |
Development: | We will discuss examples of internal/external conflicts and how they might relate to a character in a story which they are all familiar---Snow White, Star Wars etc. |
Practice: | Students will use handouts to practice both the internal/external conflict. Students will use handout to practice using more precise verbs. |
Accommodations: | Guided practice will be given to those behind in reading development. |
Checking For Understanding: | Students will discuss the story using critical thinking questions. |
