Objectives:
 Students will recognize non-fiction text features. Students will be able to identify the purpose for the text feature.
Materials:
 ELMO Feature/Purpose graphic organizer The Earth's Weather (non fiction picture book) A non-fiction picture book and graphic organizer for each student.
Introduction:
 State Purpose of the lesson. Introduce text. Explain that when authors and publishers create non-fiction text, they include a variety of items or features in the book/text to help us better understand what they are telling us.
Development:
 "I DO" PORTION OF LESSON: Teacher shows graphic organizer and book, THE EARTH'S WEATHER on ELMO. Teacher begins by discussing the title and what I know about the book from the title. T Lists title and purpose on the graphic organizer. Students write on their own organizers. T turns page and continues to point out text feature of table of contents. T lists table of contentts and purpose on graphic organizer. Students write on theie own organizers. T continues for several more pages.
Practice:
 "WE DO" PORTION OF LESSON: Teach now turns pge of THE EARTH"S WEATHER on ELMO. T instructs students to turn and talk with the people at their table to determine what text features are on this page and their purposes. T circulates and assists. Go over the student answers together. T turns the page and invite student to again turn and talk to people at their table to determine features on this page and purpose. T circulates and assists. Go over students answers together.
Accommodations:
 Teacher circulates to offer individual assistance when needed.

 T will collect student graphic organizers and check for ability to list text features and purposes.
