Goals: | The learner will be able to identify the spine of a book and the information on it. |
Objectives: | The learner will be able to identify the spine of a book and the information on it by: pointing to the information on a large facsimile; chorally identifying the parts; and selecting a book tht has the information found on a spine facsimile. |
Materials: | large facsimile book spine, small book spines for student use in guided practice and independent practice. Story book to read. |
Introduction: | Students will be asked, "What is a spine?". the instructor will explain how the spine of a bo is the same as a person's sspine. It makes us or the book stand straight and tall. Book spines have information on them. |
Development: | The instructor will point out on a large spine facsimile the information that can be founded...title, author, and call number ( address of the book, where it lives). Students will already be familiar with the title and author and their meanings. |
Practice: | Students will be put in pairs and each pair will receive a facsimilie spine. They will talk with each other about the spine and the information on it. The instructor will take up the spines and point to information of the large spine and students will chorally respond as to its identification. |

Checking For Understanding: | When students check out books the media coordinator will point to the info on the spine and the students will tell him/her what it it. |
Closure: | After students once again identify the information of the large facsimile spine, they will say a story poem, and the story will be read to them. They will then check out books and return to their classroom. |
Evaluation: | Evaluation will be on-going as students abecome more adept at selecting books from the library shelves. The media corrrdinator will also at times assess their knowedge of the information during story time. |
