 "The Gun" by Paul Langan will be used to discuss bullying and how it affects the victim.
Goals:
 1) Students will identify acts of bullying located in the story 2) Students will identify positive and negative choices made by the characters. 3) Students will identify cause/effect relationships between acts of bullying and responses by the victim 4) Students will discuss the importance of discussing problems with a trusted friend or adult
Objectives:
  1) Students will become more sensitive to incidents of bullying 2) Students will learn appropriate ways to intervene when witnessing an bullying episode 3) Students will discuss long-term affects of bullying on the victim 4) Students will distinguish various types of bullying that occur around school campus
Materials:
 Copy of "The Gun" by Paul Langan Presentation on bullying by SAFE coordinator
Introduction:
 Students are asked to define bullying. Discussion on whether or not only physical acts are considered bullying. Discuss times students have been bullied or have bullied others.
Development:
 Read "The Gun" and conduct class discussion after each chapter. Identify any acts of bullying read about and discuss how it was handled. Look for positive and negative choices made by each character.
Practice:
 Continue with identifying acts of bullying and the result of these acts for the bully as well as the victim
Accommodations:
 frequent comprehension checks extended time for any written portion pair with a reading buddy
Checking For Understanding:

 students will explain how acts of bullying can set off a chain of events that can be harmful to the victim and to themselves
