Lesson Plan : Unit 7: Exploring Rational Number

Teacher Name:
 T. Russell
Grade:
 Grade 6
Subject:
 Math

Topic:
In this unit, students will be defining and developing an understanding of positive and negative numbers and their opposites. Students will explore relationships between these numbers and extend the number line and coordinate plane to include negative coordinates. Students will graph polygons on the coordinate plane and find length of sides. They will write mathematical sentences to show relationships. Students will relate and use rational numbers in real-world situations and mathematical problems.
Content:
rational numbers, opposites, absolute value, greater than, >, less than, <, greater than or equal to, ≥, less than or equal to, ≤, origin, quadrants, coordinate plane, ordered pairs, x-axis, y-axis, coordinates, vertices, polygons
Goals:
SWBAT define, give examples of, and use the key vocabulary specific to this standard orally and in writing. (rational numbers, opposites, absolute value, greater than, >, less than, <, greater than or equal to, ≥, less than or equal to, ≤, origin, quadrants, coordinate plane, ordered pairs, x-axis, y-axis, coordinates)
Objectives:
SWBAT give the definition of “absolute value” and provide examples of how it represents a distance or magnitude and why it must always be positive.
Materials:
 Smartboard Clasrom Solutions
Introduction:
Opening Word Problem... Division "I have, who has"
Development:
Discussion on what the meaning of the definitions. This will focus and develop a broader range in vocabulary. Especially for the ESL students
Practice:
Definitions Activities from the CCGPS Frameworks Student Edition
Accommodations:
One on One instruction for those not quite comprehending the information.
Checking For Understanding:
 Quiz
