Grade: | Grade 11-12 |
Subject: | Social Studies |
Topic: | The early stages of the Civil Rights Movement |
Content: | Today, we will examine the early stages of the Civil Rights Movement. We will start with the advent of Jim Crow laws and then move through legendary court cases like Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education. We will also look at the Little Rock Nine and the Montomgery Bus Boycott and the foundation of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference |
Goals: | 1) Students will be able to recount and summarize the two major court cases discussed today -- Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education. 2) Students will be able to distinguish between the two types of segration -- de jure and de facto 3) Students will be able to analyze the Montgomery Bus Boycott and determine its impact on the Civil Rights Movement. 4) Students will hypothesize about their reaction had they been one of the Little Rock Nine. |
Objectives: | |
Materials: | PowerPoint Presentation, short video on Little Rock Nine, guided notes |
Introduction: | I plan on using two hooks to gain students' attention 1)Once all the students are seated, I will send them back out in the hall. I will then "discriminate" against and segregate them using a common fabric, usually the color of their clothing. They will then sit in a pre-assigned area. 2) Once they are segregated, I will introduce the concept of separate but equal by giving the "minority" group a fuzzy, darkened set of notes, while the majority will have the same notes, only cleanly printed. |
Development: | |
Practice: | Students will follow along with the guided notes that are provided. |
Accommodations: | We will be using a variety of things today to reach all learners. PowerPoint and video for visual learners and guided notes for those who need help following along. |
Checking For Understanding: | At the end of class, I will ask the group to give me "five fast facts" about the lesson. |
Closure: | Look ahead to tomorrow's lesson and thank them for their time. |
