Materials:
 Smartboard
Introduction:
Tell students that they may not know it, but every story has three main components: Characters - the people or animals in a story. Setting - the time and place in which the story occurs. Plot - the sequence of story events, including problems and resolutions.
Development:
Display a graphic organizer on the smartboard of the selection Elena. Have students look back at the selection on page 562. Explain that there are multiple characters in the story. Have students refer to the selection and corresponding page in their practice workbook (154). Tell students that characters of the story can be main characters and there are other characters that are of less importance because they may not appear in the story as much as the main chracters. Tell students that as we read the selection, they will be noting the characters in their graphic organizers. Point out to students that settings may have more than one location and takes place over a period of time. Explain that the setting takes place in California in the 1900s. Tell students that the plot is the sequece of events, including the problem and resolution. Tell students that there may be more that one problem in the story and multiple sequences of events. Model pointing out sequence of events on the graphic organizer. Explain that as we read the selection over the next couple of days, we will be filling in the problem(s) and sequence of events.
Practice:
Have students follow along as the characters are identified as main or other characters in the story. also, discuss how the setting and time interact. If the time took place in the winter, how would it have affected the story? Model how changing the problem affects the story outcome. Tell students to examine the story as Pablo does not die. How does this affect the story ending?
Accommodations:
The below level readers will read "America: A Dream" They will complete the level reader at their own pace with guidance and assistance from the teacher. the teacher will go over the graphic organizer with them in small groups.
Checking For Understanding:
Ask students the difference in main and other characters in the story. How does the time and setting affect the story? Have students tell how they would have resolved the problem in the story.
Closure:
Remind students that Story Structure has three main components: Characters, setting and a plot. Discuss the characteristics of each. Tell students that they will be using story structure in future readings.
Evaluation:
Students seemed to comprehend the story and were able to differientiate the main and other characters after reading he selection. It was somewhat close though. They have to work on the setting, between California, Santa Ana and the ranch. Overall, because they liked the story they were able to put it altogether.
Teacher Reflections:
The story went well as students read and filled in their graphic organizer. All students were not on task as I had to remind them to fill in their graphic organizer at the appropriate time. On the next graphic organizer as we read students will raise their hand and point out that they have found a character, setting or time and setting. This will grant them a reward.
