Teacher Name:

Grade:
 Grade 3
Subject:
 Language Arts

Topic:
Reading the novel Mr. Popper's Penguins
Content:
This lesson plan is for a fourth grade classroom working on language arts. The significance of the unit is to have the students be able to summarize Mr. Poppers Penguins. They should also be able to understand what is and is not important to the overall layout of the story, compare and contrast the information needed to understand the story, and also to understand and explain all the information they took from the story. In order for these tasks to be accomplished, the students need to have prior knowledge of summarization, compare and contrast, as well as knowledge on how to analyze a story.
Goals:
Through this section definitions and terms ofsummarization will be recalled and understood.
Objectives:
 1) Students will recall previous knowledge of main idea. 2) Students will define terms given to them, to better their understanding for future activities. 3) Students will practice main idea as a whole class and small groups.
Materials:
Main Idea worksheet. Covers the main idea of four paragraphs and refreshes the student's on what main idea is.
Introduction:
I want everyone to get with their reading buddy, for a fun game that we are going to play. I am going to show you a picture, and i want you to tell me who the picture is about. Write your answers on your white boards and when i tell you hold them up.
Development:
Play game, and after each slide, tell the correct answer and see who got it right. After the game explain to the students: "The game we just played was to help us learn about the main idea. Does anyone know what main idea means? In our game it was who the picture was about. In a book, the main idea is what the book is all about."
Practice:
"When you go back to your seat i want you to pull out a pencil. We are going to do a worksheet, and it is for you to practice figuring out the main idea."
Accommodations:
A few of the things that can be modified are movement that the small groups that the students are in are doing. Do not make them sit still and does the activity but, have them move around the room if needed, or have them stand at a tall tabel so they do not have to focus on sitting still. Also, during the class discussion, have them involved. Call on them often to keep them interested and aware that the discussion is still going on.
Checking For Understanding:
As the students as working on their sheet, walk around to see where they are at and if they are answering the questions right. After a time of work, as a class go over the worksheet, but have the students share their answers so that they are invloved.
Closure:
"We did a lot of work about main ideas today. Who can tell me what it is? Can anyone tell me how to find the main idea? I want everyone to take out their independant reading book that you have been working on, and i want you to turn to the first chapter. Even if you are past this part of the book it is ok we are going to look at it for jsut a second. I want everyone to write down the main idea from their book, and when you are done, turn it in to the box in the back. We are going to be using main ideas a lot when we start reading Mr. Popper's Penguins, so if you have any questions please let me know."
Evaluation:
After the students turn the main ideas in from their independant reading books, make sure what they wrote down is actually a main idea. Go over their answers with the student's individually, and have them explain what they wrote down to make sure that they understand the idea or main ideas.
Teacher Reflections:
Make sure to take into effect the time that it will take the students to do the worksheet, and the time that it will take to talk about it afterwards.
