Goals:
 Children will learn to identify letters of the alphabet, especially letters in their own name.
Objectives:
 TLW sing the alphabet song. TLW listen to a story. TLW identify and name the first letter of their first name.
Materials:
 Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault Letter Cards, Felt Board Letters, Magnetic Letters, or another means for displaying uppercase letters.
Introduction:
 Sing the Alphabet Song: ABCDEFG, HIJKLMNOP, QRS, TUV, WX, Y and Z, Now I know my ABC's next time won't you sing with me?
Development:
 Read the story, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Strategies: point to letters in book as you read; add felt letters to the flannel board as you name each letter as you read.
Practice:
 Display the uppercase letters of the alphabet, approximately 3-5 at one time making sure to include the letters that represent the first letters of the first names of the children in your class. Sing the following chant and ask each child to identify and name the first letter of his/her name. Hickety, Pickety, Bumblebee, Can you find your first letter for me? This can be used as a transition to center time where independent practice can occur.
Accommodations:
 Alphabet Song: point to letters to provide a visual for visual learners. Hickety Pickety: Vary the number of letters and similarity of letters available depending on child's ability level. Focus on first letter of last name for children who have mastered first letter of first name. Provide child choice during center time.

Closure:
 Regroup the children and sing the alphabet song, pausing during the song to include children's names. For example, ABCD for Daijah, EFG, HIJ for Joseph, KLMNOP, etc.
