Goals: | To have students become familiar with sports vocabulary in English. To have students state which sports they play. To ask and answer questions about sports they play. |
Objectives: | Introduction of new vocabulary for sports. To introduce simple Q&A about sports. |
Materials: | 8 picture flash cards. 4 sets of small picture cards for the game(s). Optional: CD player and CD for song or chant. |
Introduction: | Start with greetings: "Hello, how are you?" |
Development: | Introduce theme: "Today we are going to talk about sports we play! What sports do you play? I play tennis. What about you?" Use a volunteer student or ALT/JTE to have a model conversation to display to all students. |
Practice: | Introduce vocabulary and drill: Have students repeat words 2 times. Next, introduce word with general "It'S�`" "Baseball, it's baseball." Next, introduce target language: "Baseball, I play baseball" (2 times for each word.) Finally, introduce Q&A practice: "What do you play?" (break down word for word and then together. repeat two or three times.) "I play�`" **It may help to write the sentence on the chlkboard for as a visual aid. |
Accommodations: | Activity 2: Play Frenzy. Use the same cards from Karuta. Hand out one card to each student face down. Say "Take one card. Don't look!" "Now, I need two volunteers. Ok, thank you!" Do model game "T:What do you play? V1:I play (tennis). What do you play? T: I play (occer) (No match! :() T: What do you play? V2: I play (soccer). What do you play? T: I play (soccer)! (Match! :) ) Explain that "No match"means -Don't sit down and "Match" means sit down. |
Checking For Understanding: | Finally, review with general Q&A from teacher. Hold up a flash card and ask "What do you play?" and wait for someone to answer or raise their hand to answer. |
Closure: | Say "That's all for today. Everyone, stand up! Good-bye everyone!" |
