Lesson Plan : Matter changes
Teacher Name: | J Gaiduk |
Grade: | Grade 3 |
Subject: | Science |
Topic: | Chemical and Physical changes in matter. |
Content: | Science Standards: Physical Science 1.g a new substance may be formed Investigation and Experimentation 5.d, 5.e Predict the outcome |
Goals: | Students will be able to form a hypothesis about what happens when a chemical change occurs, and using the experiment confirm if their hypothesis is correct or incorrect. |
Objectives: | Given the ingredients for a root beer float, students will form a hypothesis about what chemical or physical changes will occur when the ingredients are put together. Students will observe what happens, list the observations, and prove if their hypothesis is correct or incorrect. |
Materials: | Worksheet, ice cream, root beer. Vocabulary words: hypothesis, physical change, chemical change. The video "The Magic School Bus In the Dough" |
Introduction: | We've bee studying matter. What it is, what makes up matter, and how it can change. Today we are going to form a hypothesis about what happens when two different kinds of matter are mixed together. |
Development: | Before a Scientist begins an experiment they form a hypothesis, a question, a prediction of what will happen. Let's do that now- (complete the hypothesis worksheet with the students. |
Practice: | Then ask the students to follow along as you put the ingredients together- 1) Soda-- what is it (a solid, liquid, gas) what does it look like, sound like etc. 2) Ice cream- what is it (a solid, liquid, gas) what does it look like, sound like etc. 3) The chocolate syrup- if there is any- in the cup what is it (a solid, liquid, gas) what does it look like, sound like etc. What happens if we add a scoop of ice cream to the soda? Don't stir it--- have students write down what happens--now add a little more--- what happens if we gently stir it? |
Accommodations: | |
Checking For Understanding: | What type of changes are happening? Can we separate the soda and the ice cream? What type of change is that? Circle this on your worksheet. Look at your hypothesis, did your hypothesis prove to be true or not? Why? Write your reflection on the worksheet. |
Closure: | What did we learn today? What would you do differently next time? |
