Content:
 Vocabulary Words: bolt, horizon, lightning, rumbled, thunder, weather
Goals:
 The learner will identify vocabulary words taken from the reading selection, Thunder and Lightning.
Objectives:
 Objective 3.04 The learner will demonstrate knowledge by identifying the meaning of a vocabulary word.
Materials:
 Paper divided into 4 parts and numbered 1-4.
Introduction:
 Ask students to read the introduction, Thunder and Lightning. Discuss the idea that thunderstorms are helpful because they provide rain and clean the air. Ask children to use what they know about words to read the sentences and the highlighted words that are displayed in the text.
Development:
 After reading the short selection, model by dividing a paper into 4 boxes and number each part from 1-4. A vocabulary word will be chosen by the teacher and placed in box #1. The teacher will then look up the word in the dictionary and write the definition in box #2. In box #3, the teacher will write the definition of the word (in their own words) and a sentence using the vocabulary word. The last box will be used to illustrate the vocabulary word.
Practice:
 As teacher is modeling, the students are writing the same information in their own boxes.
Accommodations:
 Students can work together in cooperative group to complete the 4 parts of the vocabulary word; students are given choices of which word they would like to use; students can work with a buddy.
Checking For Understanding:
 Monitor students as they are practicing.
Closure:
 Students can volunteer to share their final products with the class.
Evaluation:
 The students would be given the opportunity to use the words in sentences or could be given a cloze activity where students have to fill in the blanks in given sentences.
