Lesson Plan : Solving by Factoring

Teacher Name:
 Ben Godwin
Grade:
 Grade 9-10
Subject:
 Math

Topic:
Utilizing factoring to find solutions that satisfy the given equations.
Content:
 -Factoring -Factors -Quadratic equations
Goals:
To reacquaint students with the idea and process of factoring equations and then to use that knowledge in finding solutions to quadratic equations.
Objectives:
Students will go through the reviewing of factorization as both a lead-in to the lesson as well as a short review of how to factor. Confusion may exist but everything they need to know is included into the lesson.
Materials:
Nothing other than the made lesson and a pencil is required.
Introduction:
Review section => gets the students into the factoring mindset.
Development:
Students work through easier problems to essentially teach themselves how to find solutions. There are questions included as they go to prompt thinking as well as learning.
Practice:
I will walk around the room as students work through their lesson offering help as needed or requested.
Accommodations:
Instead of the typical lecture style instruction, students will be faced with being "student-learners" and teaching themselves. I will be available to clear any confusion or clarify.
Checking For Understanding:
There are three questions included at the end of the lesson for students to reflect on the important aspects of factoring and solving quadratics.
Closure:
There will be a short discussion of the three "Conclusions" questions so any confusion may be addressed and corrected before they start their homework.
Evaluation:
Attached homework sheet where the first eight problems requires: a) Determining if an equation may be factored, b) If so, factor the equation, and c) Find the solutions that satisfy the equation and the last two problems give the solutions and they must form the expanded equation.
