Materials: | Expository texts for grades third through fifth, graphic organizers, pencils, 8"x11" copy paper, art supplies, scissors, rubrics for flip chart, Ticket Out The Door (answering the essential question) |
Introduction: | Groups of various genres (fiction: realistic, fables, folktales, historical; nonfiction: expository) for review by students |
Development: | Model how to search through text in order to identify its genre. Compare and contrast nonfiction and fiction texts. Explain characteristics of each genre type. Complete Venn diagram identifying similarities and differences of nonfiction and fiction texts. |
Practice: | In small groups, according to students' reading instructional levels, identify elements in expository texts together. List on class graphic organizer. (Nonfiction elements, title, facts, information, data, captions, photographs, headings, sub-headings, maps, graphs, charts, tables) |
Accommodations: | Text levels: Instructional levels of text, varies from second grade to sixth grade level. Graphic organizers: Instructional levels vary from introductory, intermediate, to advanced. |
