 Whiteboard, brainstorm sheet.
Students will be asked to give information on what is a biography? How do you know? What is the difference between a biography and an autobiography? The whiteboard will have a list of the first 10 words that will be used for vocabulary development.
Using a brainstorm sheet, students will be asked to write down the points that make up a biography. They are given time to write down the information. As a group, all ideas are then written on the board and changes can be made or added as needed. We come to an agreement as to what is a good definition for a biography. Students will then be asked to name famous singers, who they know of that have had biographies written. I will then ask if any of the students have heard, read, seen or know of Selena.
As the teacher starts sharing some facts about Selena, vocabulary words will be introduced in simple sentences in order to be able to start identifying vocabulary words within the biography and start defining words.
The students will work in groups. As ESL students working at different levels can be frustrating to some students. Working as a group, gives the student to interact, use and correct vocabulary usage in the classroom.
Checking For Understanding:
Being ESL stude Students will work with each other in coming up with sentences for use with they biography of Selena. Students will be given the opportunity to share information.
The student will retrace with the teacher the different points or features of a biography and attempt to use the vocabulary words in sentences. tod
Walking around the classroom and talking to the students, I can work on assessing how they apply their new vocabulary words with the subject of what a biography is.
