 Homophone Concentration Word sort/word study
Goals:
 To match homophones that have the same meaning and pronunciation. Automatically recognize and fluently read identified grade-level high frequency words encountered in and out of context.
Objectives:
 To match homophones used in a sentence or pictures that have the same meaning and pronunciation.
Materials:
 Cards with homophone sentences or pictures with words. Overhead of Homophone Concentration directions. Overhead copies of homophone sentences or pictures and words.
Introduction:
 Introduce and explain the rules for the activity. Make a copy of the rules on an overhead film to be shown on an overhead projector.
Development:
 Using the overhead projector model how to play the game. Place cards face down on the projector and have two students demonstrate the game by turning over two cards and reading the cards to determine if they are a match.
Practice:
 Put the students into groups of 2-4. Have the students practice matching the cards used in the overhead demonstration.
Accommodations:
 For struggling readers the game can be accommodated by using pictures with homophone words instead of homophone sentences and or using a limited number of pairs of cards with which to play.For gifted students the game can be changed to find homophones with different meanings and pronunciations.
Checking For Understanding:
 Observe and informally assess students throughout the activity. When the game is completed or time has expired, each student will compare the cards they have to prove they are matches.
Closure:
 Students can share the pairs they collected. As a class discuss any homophones that students found difficult.
Evaluation:
 The students will record the correct number of matches in a homophone match record.
Teacher Reflections:
 Reflect on the lesson and record any problems or concerns and adjust lesson as necessary.
