Content:
Word Families - it; -ound; -ake; -op; -an; -all; -ot; -at
Goals:
For students to recognize the use of word families as a tool they can use to decode words which will then aid them in spelling and reading fluently.
Objectives:
To sort and categorize words belonging to various word families To brainstorm words that belong to word families. To create word family flip books of words by adding initial letters to rhymes. To read word family lists fluently.
Materials:
overhead; Word families poem; Poem on transparency; Flip books with words; blank flip books
Introduction:
Read the title of the poem. Ask the students what they know about word families. Ask them if they know how they can be useful. Read the poem in unison.
Development:
Explain that a word family has the same ending letter pattern and rhymes. Read the second stanza, lines 1,2,3. Use the -it word family in line 3 as an example. Explain that word families are useful in decoding words and in helping you spell. Relate their spelling units to word families.
Practice:
Tell students to listen for the word families as we reread the poem. Have students each read a stanza Have each student choose a line in the stanza they read or a stanza someone else read and list the rhyming words and state the word family.
Accommodations:
Accommodations have already been made by choosing a poem at their reading ability level instead of their grade level. Accommodations have also been made by working in small groups.
Checking For Understanding:
As a group ask the following questions: How can word families be useful when reading? How can word families be useful when spelling?
Closure:
Have them answer the question in line 3 of the last stanza.
Evaluation:
Have students create their own flip book. Have them share them with others. Check that they can read the flip book fluently.
