Content: | Standards: 8.3.2, 8.3.3, 8.3.5 |
Goals: | 1) I would like students to identify character flaws in Josh. Once they have done this, I would like them to be able to predict the outcome of the novel. 2) I would like students to relate to the book. 3) I would like students to learn lessons by analyzing choices that Josh makes. |
Objectives: | 1) Students will enjoy reading The Gospel According to Larry. 2) Students will understand the importance of privacy. 3) Students will understand their rights as human beings. 4) Students will identify character flaws in Josh. 5) Students will connect these flaws to the consequences Josh suffers in the novel. |
Materials: | The Gospel According to Larry, benefits/consequences of privacy hand out, privacy scenarios handout, privacy group activity hand out |
Introduction: | I will introduce students to the character flaws of Josh. What is a flaw? What is a character flaw? Can you see any flaws in Josh so far? How do you feel about Josh keeping to himself? How is this good/bad? |
Development: | I will introduce the theme of the day's lesson. We will be talking about the pros and cons of privacy. I will hand out the Benefits/Consequences of privacy hand out. I will also put the information on an overhead projector. I will ask students to determine how each item on the handout could be a benefit or a consequence of privacy. |
Practice: | Students will be given a "privacy scenarios" hand out. They will get into groups and examine all of the scenarios on the sheet. They must determine why privacy in that situation is important, and what some of the benefits/consequences would be. They need to come up with 2 benefits and 2 consequences for each. They will read their answers in class. |
Accommodations: | Kinesthetic: Students may write on the overhead projector. Visual/Spatial: graphic organizers, worksheets Interpersonal: Group work |
Checking For Understanding: | I will come around and answer questions. I will also listen to their answers given in class. |
Closure: | This concludes today's lesson about privacy. Tomorrow we will discuss Internet Ethics. |
Evaluation: | I will evaluate students by what answers they come up with during discussion. |
