Objectives:
 ELA4R3:The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly in reading and writing ELA4R4:The student reads aloud, accurately, familiar material in a variety of genres, in a way that makes meaning clear to listeners (Students will use explanations/definitions as context clues to construct the meaning of an unfamiliar word/develop vocabulary through meaning and meaningful real word experiences).
Materials:
 Scott Foresman Readers-gr. 3 (teachers and students book-Imagine That) Phonics worksheets/grammar practice sheets/spelling worksheets/paper/pencil/newspaper
Introduction:
 TW:discuss with students how readers can sometimes find an explanation or definition near an unknown word that will help them figure out the meaning of the word or words. TW:discuss with students how they can use what they know to read new words. The reasons authors write/why authors organize work in paragraphsand why they have more than one reason to write.
Development:
 TW: have students read Words to Know and think about what each word means/have students find words-secret/baby/shield and mean on page 74 and reread the sentences in which they appear/ Also, have the students think about why the auhtor chose to describe certain activities on pps. 76/77/have a volunteer read aloud the first paragraph on page 80/and reread page 82, discussing why the author use certain photography.
Practice:
 SW: read and answer questions that deal with(Main idea/supporting details/drawing conclusions/Inferential/Literal
Accommodations:
 Show a picture of an extended family and the members. Ask the students to look at the pictures of Anthony with the 2 adults on p.74 and draw conclusions.
Checking For Understanding:
 TW:ask students what words near tourists help you figure out its meaning?/for long e sound- how would you try to read words baby & keep? and what do you think about the author's purpose by rereading pps.74-75.
Closure:
 Set the stage for sharing personal responses by modeling. for example: I think that, with enough practice, etc.
Evaluation:
 Teacher observation answer/question period Leveled practice tests
Teacher Reflections:
 Talk about FAMILY. Ask the students what does their family mean to them. Bring in pictures of your family or draw pictures of your family and compare to Anthony's family. Also think about what it would be like to not have a family/to be all alone!
