Goals:
 After reading "Of Plymouth Plantation", students will develop a one page historical essay from one event in their own life.
Objectives:
 RLA.11.2.1 employ writing strategies to address specific purposes and audiences (e.g., narrative; expository; descriptive and/or persuasive). RLA.11.2.2 generate topics and plan approaches to writing (e.g., graphic organizers; outlines) using pre-writing strategies.
Materials:
 Elements of Literature textbook Sequencing graphic organizer, Transition vocabulary handout Computer lab
Introduction:
 Students read orally and discuss "Of Plymouth Plantation".
Development:
 Teacher's guide students through discussion discussion of the characteristics that make a historical narrative. Transition vocabulary is identified by the class as well as the progression and sequence of events.
Practice:
 In class, students complete a rough draft of a personal narrative with optional graphic organizer to help students with the sequencing of events.
Accommodations:
 1. Graphic organizer for sequencing events. 2. List of transition words generated by the class is made available to students. 3. Computer lab is used to type final drafts with spelling check and grammar check available if needed. 4. Audio CDs of the story are available to students who need to reinforce the story.
Checking For Understanding:
 Teacher assesses final drafts after which students may may revisions.
Closure:
 Students may choose to share their essays with the class for extra credit.
Evaluation:
 1. Specific length (one page double spaced) 2. Sequencing of at least four events 3. Use of a variety of transition vocabulary.
