Content:
 Students will learn about the components of myths and write one of their own. vocabulary- myth, origin, nature, traditions, customs
Goals:
 Students will learn about the components of myths and create their own within a cooperative pair or group. They will then present their myth around a camp fire author sharaing. While creating their own they will write myths with language mechanics.
Objectives:
 ELA Standard 8:11 Identify and show the relevance of foreshadowing clues. 8:12 Identify sensory details and figurative language 8:13 Identify speaker of poem or story Fulfill steps in writing process Focus and Planning: Drafting: Assessing and Revising: Assessing and Editing: Publishing and Evaluating Standard 19: Writing 19.9 Write a story with a beginning, middle and end that contain details of setting.
Materials:
 copies of various myths from various cultures and ethnic groups Myth template computers white construction paper
Introduction:
 Over a period of two weeks read various myths to students during read- a-loud; Students will go on line to myth site in pairs and read "How Kangaroo Got His Tail".
Development:
 After each read aloud discuss components of myth. Ask questions why do they think this myth was created. Discuss how myths helped explain origins of planets and life as well as other natural events that early people did not understand. In pairs have students look up myth vocabulary.
Practice:
 As a class choose a topic to create a class myth about an event in nature. Brainstorm ideas and let students vote on myth topic. Create myth on large easel allow students to scribe.
Accommodations:
 Depending on overall ability, needs of class or time constraits this lesson could stop after creation of class myth, or be created in larger groups. Scribe for students if allowed or needed.
Checking For Understanding:
 Teacher will check students progress using rubric and peer revise and edit sheets to see that students are creating a story that fulfills myth requirements.
Closure:
 Students will present/share their myth around class campfire with illustrations.
Evaluation:
 Students will have created a myth fulfilling the requirement of rubric. Creating a myth/story with a beginning middle and end. Written in best handwriting with correct capitalization and punctuation.
Teacher Reflections:
 If I was doing this lesson with a child at risk I think the use of computers would engage his/her interest both at accessing the myth site to read a legend and also when creating his/her own. Having students work in pairs or groups of three allows them to pool their thoughts and learn from each other. Peer revising and editing allows them to create a story that is student not teacher created.
