Subject:

Topic:
 resolution -DPI (dots per inch)
Content:
use of scanner for production of images image size, DPI, Print size, screen resolution, scan scale, descreen,
Goals:
To be able to scan an image with appropriate settings for a planned outcome Secondary objective - be able to transfer setting information to different user interface. Using Inspiration students will make a concept map of the relationship of scanner settings to printed and screen image.
Objectives:
Students will perform a series of experiments that will result in 1)printed images with easily observeable differenses, 2) a concept map to identify variables. Secondary objective - be able to transfer setting information to different user interface. Assumptions: Students can open applications Inspiration, Adobe Photoshop, save a file, print to a networked printer.
Materials:
a small object, photograph, magizine image scanner attached to computer color laser printer, projector for demonstration
Introduction:
Scanning for effect-Introduction with questions. What is resolution? What is DPI? Cursory assessment of knowledge of students scanning/printing vocabulary. Why when you print from the internet does the image come out so small? When I select sharpen image, why do parts of the image distort?
Development:
Open Inspiration type Microtec scanner as the main idea Make associated points for settings DPI, Size and Scale, Descreen Set other variables to a standard for the duration of the exersize (mode RGB) demonsrate, pre-scan, selection tool, overview burrton. Scan the item or photo at 72, 300, 900, Print at 100% observe & record visual differences
Practice:
Have the students repeat the three scans, change 1 variable (scale, print, image size) at a time. repeat the print. Include at least 1 - 72 dpi as an enlarged image. Scan the Magazine image with & without the desceen setting. Drag an image from the internet to the desk top. Open in photoshop, enlarge image size (200 % do not change the dpi - print. Initiate a group discussion using the results for material to use in the concept map Save all origional scans in a folder - Use copies to make adjustments.
Accommodations:

Checking For Understanding:
solicit questions from students- have the other students answer as often as possible -have a student repeat the demonstration.
Closure:
Screen images are all 72 dpi, enlarging onscreen is enlarging the view - not te image size.
Evaluation:
Print a 300 dpi PhotoShop document incorporating 3 images generated at 72,300, 600 dpi. students will need to make adjustments, Create an Inspiration concept map developed for Epson scanner.
