 Basic kendo posture and strikes.
Content:
Students will have a packet with a brief history of kendo, along with key vocabulary and instructions on how to perform strikes. They will be outside, were I will demonstrate posture and how to perform strikes. They will them pair up for practice. After a ten-minute practice section, they will mock-fight to show their understanding of the material. The mock fight will be 1/2 of their final grade. Key Vocabulary: Sensei, kendo, ken, kenshi, bushido, shinai, bokken, tsuba, bogu, dan, kyu, strike, datotsu-bui, men, migi-men, hidari-men, do, kote, tsuki, thrust, shiai, ki-ken-tai-ichi, Nihon Kendo Kata, hakama, keikogi, kamea, chudan no kamea, ashi-sabaki, okuri-ashi.
Goals:
I hope to teach these students basic kendo technique, as well as instill in them the morals that kendoists hold. They will be taught basic posture and proper shinai grips, as well as three basic cuts and how to perform them. They will be taught basic kendo history and vocab. The students will mock-battle to see what it would feel like to be in an actual sword fight. I hope these student learn respect and dicsipline.
Objectives:
These students will have to correctly perform chudan no kamea, and kihon-ichi. Winning or losing the mock-fight WILL NOT affect the grade. They will have to show respect towards their opponents and towards their sensei. They will also have to have good cut techniques and proper grip on their shiai.
Materials:
 25 "Basic Kendo" packets, 25
Introduction:
I will write the characters for "kendo" on the board, and ask the class if they know what the word means. If no one can guess, I will tell them that it means "Way of the Sword" or "Kendo". I will pass out the "Basic Kendo" packets. They will each be handed a "shinai", which is actually a pointer stick.
Development:
I will have all of the students stand and follow my movements. I will first show and explain proper posture and how to correctly hold a shinai. I will then demostrate chudan, having them follow my movements. I will then detail the three cuts they will learn, and explain how the shiai battles will work. This will take about 10-15 minutes.
Practice:

Accommodations:

Checking For Understanding:
They will then face off in shiai. There will be five groups up at a time, with two students to a group. Each set of shiai should last one minute.
Closure:
The students will be led back inside and handed water bottles. They will put the "shinai" into a bin, and they will get their grades the next day.
Evaluation:
They will be graded on a shiai battle, in which they will demonstrate the skills they learn. This is 1/2 the grade. Behavior and attitude make up 1/4 the grade. The remaining 1/4 will be how well they paid attention and how much effort they put in.
Teacher Reflections:
I would like to see students be able to compare several disciplines of martial arts and see how they stack up against mixed martial arts.
