Topic:
Concept Mapping a Web Site Design using Inspiration 7.6 (EDITED)
Content:
Pre-planning a Website's structure: levels, linkages and page relationships. Vocabulary: homepage, index, navigation array, inspiration, links, domain, relationships, concept mapping
Goals:
 1. Students will demonstrate competence with Inspiration. 2. Students will successfully complete a multi-layered Inpsiration model of the future Website. 3. Students will explain to the rest of the Web Design class, using the Inspiration concept map, the design of their assigned portion of new Web site.
Objectives:
After reviewing the use of Inspiration, the students will plan and design an updated version of the school's website for a Web design class. After mastering the design features inherent in inspiration, the students will extrapolate the concept map creating a multi-layered school site design. After review of the concept map, students will be able to articulate the relationships from the concept map and between site pages, content and links. Given time to understand the concept map relationships, students will build the pages, links and navigation for the site.
Materials:
One computer per student with Inspiration 7.6 installed. Pen and paper. An overhead projection system attached to the teacher's computer for demonstration purposes.
Introduction:
 1. Initial training by teacher on inspiration; simple exercise in concept mapping to focus students on the concept, the tools in Inspiration, and the potential use in Web Design. 2. Simple, 5-6 page Website design exercise. 3. Class discussion on how this tool can be used to design the various parts of the school Web site.
Development:
 1. Teams will be grouped to design the architecture and page relationships for the site: broken down into major parts of the site (administration, departments, faculty, etc.) 2. Initial class demo by teacher on how to build the first 2 layers of the site (index page and second level)
Practice:
 1. Teams break out and begin phase 1 design. 2. Teacher monitors groups and assists as needed. 3. Advanced learners act as assistants.
Accommodations:
 1. Pen and paper for homework as an alternative to computer program 2. Advanced students teamed with students experiencing difficulty. 3. Individualized teacher instruction when necessary.
Checking For Understanding:
 1. Teacher-initiated evaluation of tools, terms and features of Inspiration. 2. Students successfully submit finished Web site projects
Closure:
 1. Class meets as whole group to assess and synthesize all project parts. 2. Teams progress to building phase of Web site
Evaluation:
 1. Web site is successfully completed. 2. Navigation array is functional and effective.
Teacher Reflections:
Teacher will use the completed web site to evaluate the success of this lesson. Were students motivated by this lesson? How will I follow up this lesson?
