Goals: | Students should be able to assess the Owens Valley geographical and climate attributes. Assess limitations and attributes as well as the strategical regimentation of detainees to cope with this unique area and assess the ability of detainees to farm and use land to highest potential for food production and livelihood. |
Objectives: | Climatic, geographic, cultural and socioeconomic awareness of area Manzanar was located. Cultural and social impacts of detainees on limiting and substandard land. Research and analysis of procurement of site for detainees. Analysis of soil qualities and hydrological cycles with in unique climate. |
Materials: | Farewell to Manzanar book. Online research document ttp://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/manz/hrst.htm Research additional data/sites that supports students understanding of Manzanar site and impact on detainees. |
Introduction: | Review geographical map data and site analysis of Owens Valley and Manzanar site. Discuss climate and soil factors involved in food production for inhabitants both past and present. |
Development: | Present students with guided questions throughout reading of document by Nation Parks Service and designate book chapters, and additional research to investigate further on own. |

Checking For Understanding: | Three separate question sets will be presented on reading material and final discussion will initiate what techniques were used to overcome challenges faced by Manzanar detainees. A final summary paper will be turned in with students assessment of detainees level of success in the Owens Valley. |
