Topic:
 Nutrition 101
Content:
 The Essential Nutrients
Goals:
My goal for this lesson to is teach students how the essential nutrients function in their bodies and what types of foods they need to eat to receive these nutrients.
Objectives:
TEKS 1(B): Students will be able to identify the nutrients, their functions and food sources.
Materials:
Teacher's copy of outlined notes, 30 blank notes for students to fill in, 30 anticipation guides, 30 semantic maps, 30 QDA charts
Introduction:
Pass out a true/false anticipation guide worksheet with statements relating to the information that is going to be taught during class. Have students make an educated guess whether or not the statement is correct.
Development:
Pass out an outline of notes on the essential nutrients. The outline will have blanks for students to fill in as they learn the new material. ELL students and special education students will receive outlined notes that are highlighted in different colors and have pictures representing the examples of the nutrients.
Practice:
Give a "QDA Chart" after the lesson. QDA stands for questions, answers and details. In partners students are to fill out this chart with the help of their outlined notes. For ELL and special education students the same pictures in the notes will be on the chart to help them connect the picture to the idea, concept or term.
Accommodations:

Checking For Understanding:
Students will be given a blank semantic map titled essential nutrients. They are to fill out the six nutrients, their functions and give example of food in each of the bubbles. I will walk around the room to check for understanding. ELL and special education students will work with an assigned buddy.
Closure:
It is important to learn about these nutrients in order to have a healthy functioning body. Carbs, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water are all necessary nutrients to have in your body on a daily basis. Students will get out their true/false anticipation guide and as a class we will go over the correct answers.
