Lesson Plan : I can organize my folder
Teacher Name: | Jessica Fiveash |
Grade: | Grade 2 |
Subject: | Other |
Topic: | Organization |
Content: | Homework folders that are kept in students' backpacks The importance of maintaining organized folders |
Goals: | Students will keep their papers in the correct place and lost work will be prevented |
Objectives: | Students will organize their homework folders by following a list of procedures given by the teacher |
Materials: | a folder with two pockets - one folder for every student sticky labels computer powerpoint presentation projection equipment |
Introduction: | The teacher begins the lesson by looking for important things such as eyeglasses, graded papers, signed permission slips, etc. Ask the students if they have seen any of the lost items. Become visibly distressed. Where are my things? Have you seen them? Do you know where they are? (no! students will chime in and guess where the items might be) Well, I can't expect you guys to know where my things are. Why not? Because it is not your job to keep up with my things. It i my job to make sure I always know where things are located. |
Development: | Do you ever lose things at home? Do you ask your parents where they are? What do they say when you ask them? What about your clothes at home? Do you have a closet or a dresser for all of your clothes? How do you put away your clothes? When you open up a drawer, do you just put all the clean clothes that you see into the drawer? Or do you have the drawers organized? At my house, we have different drawers for different things. Underwear and socks are put together. Tshirts are put together. Jeans go together, etc. Is that what you do at your house? Why? What if you did not have those different areas? It is very good to have a special place for everything that is yours. You can use labels to remind you where everything goes. This helps our eyes and our brains to think fast about where to find our things when we need them. Have you ever been late for something fun because you could not find your other shoe? Keeping things in the proper place saves more time for having fun! We can waste a lot of time and energy searching for things. If we know how to make special spaces for our things, our lives become much easier and we can be much happier. Do you agree? Anyone have something to add? Powerpoint slides of folders and step by step procedures is now on the screen. This will be used to enhance the learning of the material. Teacher takes out a folder that was used last year by a very unorganized student. Teacher shows the students the outside and inside of the folder. There are papers in the pockets-ripped and folded. It looks extremely messy. Ask students if they like this folder. Tell them that folders that look like this are unacceptable. This is not showing that you know how to keep your things together. Next, show the students a folder that has been kept nice and organized. Tell them this one is the way all of the folders need to look. There are certain things that they will have to remember when they get into their backpacks. Each part of the folder is important. THere are two pockets. There will be labels on the pockets for you and your parents to know exactly where things go. The front of our folders have our names on them. It is very important that we do not write on the name labels. Why? Because after a while, it will be very hard to read and that will waste MY time and yours! The pockets on the inside are labeled: the left side pocket is for any papers that I am sending home that need to stay home. the right side pocket is for papers that need to be returned to school. This can be homework, permission slips, etc. |
Practice: | Now I will hand you your very own folder with your name on the front. Always take care of your folders because I don't think your parents will be happy if they have to pay for another one because you tore your first one up. You guys are big kids, so I know that I don't need to worry about that. |
Accommodations: | For students with learning disabilities, have a parent initial section on the inside or a place for stickers on the inside to be sure the parent helps them empty the folder at night, etc. Many students do not get the important papers to their parents for them to sign. |
Checking For Understanding: | when students have their folders on their desks, walk around the room and check inside the folders. Look to see that the graded tests are in the left pocket to remain at home and that the homework assignments are in the right pocket to complete and send back to school. |
Closure: | Ok! Your exit ticket for today is to tell me one reason it is smart to be organized. I will be checking your folders as you come in tomorrow. Good work today! |
Evaluation: | Missing homework assignments, etc. = Reteach and remind procedures |
