Goals:
 1. Demonstrate basic dental hygiene instrumentation techniques. 2. Demonstrate basic dental hygiene process of care for pediatric and adult prophylaxis. 3. Recognize the dental hygiene core competencies.
Objectives:
 1. List the two major dental diseases caused by plaque. 2. Explain the role of plaque in oral health/periodontal disease. 3. Describe the etiology, developmental stages of plaque formation. 4. Describe composition of plaque. 5. List bacteria found in early and late plaque. 6. List what factors plaque formation is dependent upon. 7. Describe clinical characteristics of plaque, i.e. appearance, distribution, occurrence. 8. State the methods of plaque removal. 9. Identify and chart intraoral plaque and determine the plaque score. 10. Disclose for plaque on a clinic partner. 11. Chart a plaque score on a clinic partner.

 INSTRUCTOR: Slides, Projector, Study Guide with notes, Laser pen, Study Guide Handouts STUDENTS: Lab/clinic assignment � Sterilized mouth mirror and explorer, disclosing solution, vaseline, dapen dish, q-tips, 2X2 gauze, bib clips, a/w syringe tips, saliva ejector, plaque score sheet, red/blue pencils and eraser,personal protective devices
Introduction:
 The dirtiest part of the body is the oral cavity. The mouth is like an incubator. It is dark, wet, warm; and on any given day it is a breeding ground for billions of bacteria. It is the source of all dental disease.
Development:
 Video Demonstration: 1. Disclosing of a Patient 2. Charting of a Plaque Score
Practice:
 Lab clinic/lab assignment: 1. Students in partners will disclose for plaque. 2. Students in partners will chart a plaque score.

Closure:
 When the patient learns about the etiology of plaque and how to effectively remove it from their mouths, they begin to take ownership for their own dental health. It�s awesome to see them come back on recall appointments having made a paradigm shift and presenting with lower plaque scores.
