Content:
 To give students awareness of characteristics of students who are at high risk for suicide, warning signs, where to find assistance, and how to help a high risk person.
Goals:
 1.Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention. 2.Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid health information and health promoting products and services. 3.Students will demonstrate an ability to practice valid health enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks
Objectives:
 1.To learn key concepts of suicide prevention 2.To understand the characteristics of students who are at higher risk to attempt suicide, warning signs of teens, and what to do if a friend is suicidal 3.To practice needed skills by studying stories of suicidal teenagers 4.To discern facts and myths of suicide
Materials:
 �Video � �Depression: On The Edge� �TV/VCR �4x6 Index Cards �5 sheets of Construction Paper �Notebook Paper �Pencils �Tape �What�s Going On? stories and answers �Construction paper for class �Typing paper for class
Introduction:
 1.Inquire- What is suicide?, Who has known someone who has succeeded or tried to commit suicide? , What are your thoughts on suicide? 2.Watch video (Depression-On the Edge) 3.Discuss
Development:
 1.Read Aloud- What's Going On story "Latosha's Story" 2.Demonstrate how to recognize signs (write down) 3.Share how to identify the "high risk" group in the story. 4.Brainstorm on how to help a suicidal friend. (Listen, Be direct, Get help, Call 911)
Practice:
 1.Using selected "What's Going On" stories students within their groups will identify why individual is high risk, what suicidal signs are shown, and how to assist. 2.Students will role play showing healthy interaction when dealing with a friend/relative/acquaintance who shows signs of depression or suicidal thoughts. 3.Students will match index cards to categories posted around the room.
Accommodations:
 1.Searching prompts- what to look for. (Students may struggle as to what information is being asked for during the website or service search, so a rubric will be formed that they can follow, knowing what is expected allievates some anxiety.) 2.Students will be grouped for peer support. (Grouping with other students takes part of the stress off student with SLD, they will have peers to fall back on and bounce ideas off of to complete their task.) 3.Students will be given verbal prompts when needed. (Students may need verbal prompts to call them back to tasks at hand.) 4.Students will be given note taking assistance for video to participate in discussion following. (This is for students to recognize that they will be asked to participate in the discussion, so they need to stay focused.)

 1.Who are at risk? 2.What are some signs of depression or suicidal behavior? 3.What can you do?
Closure:
 1.Suicide is preventable. 2.Suicide is a threat to all people and all ages. 3.Early intervention and assistance is available.
Evaluation:
 1.Student successfully recognized signs of depression and persons with a high risk for suicide. 2.Student successfully created a portfolio of health information, products, and services to assist with depression and suicidal thinking. 3. Student successfully produced ways to assist those with suicidal risk factors or depression. 4. Student successfully produced a list of ways to reduce health risks
