Lesson Plan : Place Value - Building Numbers
Teacher Name: | Randi Bachand |
Grade: | Grade 2 |
Subject: | Special Education |
Topic: | Introduction to Place Value: Building numbers using colored rods. 30 min. Lesson |
Content: | "Math-U-See" program. Build it, write it, say it. Vocab: Hundreds, Tens, Units. Identify numbers 1-10 with corresponding color coded rods. Lesson is taught in a small group setting, 9 students, teacher and an instructional assistant. |
Goals: | Students will build, write and say numbers through the tens place. |
Objectives: | Students will: "Build a number" (through the tens place value using corresponding colored rods and place value mats). "Write the number" (student uses dry erase marker to write the number on their desk). "Say the number" (student touches the tens rods then ones). Example: 75 - "Seven tens, 5 units". |
Materials: | Place value mats: (ones-green, tens-blue, hundreds-red) colors match the corresponding blocks/rods. Colored blocks. Dry erase markers. Erasers. |
Introduction: | Review color coded rods: "Show me a 5". Students pick out a 5 rod from the tubs, and holds it up. Check that everyone is holding up the correct rod. Continue calling out numbers 1-10, until all blocks have been identified. |
Development: | "Today we are going to build, write and say numbers that are greater than 10." Pass out place value mats. Explain the colored columns. "Put your hand on the tens column, now the ones, now the hundreds." Briefly practice calling out columns. |
Practice: | Call out a number (from 11-99). Students build it, write it on their desks and in unison call out the values. Example: "Let's all put our hand on the tens column first and read our mats together." "Ready, touch and read." "Seven tens, 5 units, seventy five." |
Accommodations: | Three students are working at a much lower level than the rest of the group. They will imitate my built and written answers. I will say the number parts and they will repeat the answer back to me. For students who demonstrate an understanding of the lesson, give them their own individual number to work on. For students who have mastered their individual numbers through the tens place, give them a 3 digit number to build. |
Checking For Understanding: | Observe student's built numbers and written numbers. Assist students who have the wrong answer, build it with them the right way. |
Closure: | Briefly review the lesson with the students. Brief group discussion: What part of the lesson was your favorite? What part did you find difficult? Was the mat useful? Why or why not? Does it help you to have color coded blocks? Why or why not? Explain that their next lesson will involve them working in their chapter work packets. |
Evaluation: | Students will apply their understanding of place value/numerals by correctly completing pages 1-3 of their chapter packet. |
