Lesson Plan : Strength In Temptation

Teacher Name:
 Elder Richawn Randall
Grade:
 Grade 9-10
Subject:
 Other

Topic:
Sunday Morning Enrichment Facing Temptation/Strength In Temptation Matthew 4:1-11
Content:
There were many events in Jesus' life that helped identify Him as Messiah. One of these events was temptation. Jesus' time of temptation followed the high moment of His baptism. During His temptation, He recited scripture. The devil tried to test Jesus' power and authority as God's Son, but Jesus did not fail. All of us face temptation in life. How can we overcome it? Jesus' experience of overcoming temptation set an example for us.
Goals:
Students will be able to succeed in resisting temptation when it is presented in every area of their lives.
Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students will EXAMINE the meaning of Jesus' temptation, REFLECT on ways to deal with personal temptation and IDENTIFY moments of temptation and Christ-centered methods of responding to them.
Materials:
In teen(C. E. Discipleship Handbook),Bible,Memory Verses that deal with resisting temptation and power over Satan(I John 4:4),Pen/Pencil and PowerPoint Presentation.
Introduction:
A volunteer will be asked to come to the front of the class and lean against a wall with their arms extended in a position that would be like a push up if they were on the floor. Students will be told that the wall represents sin, and they have to resist it to the best of their ability. If they keep leaning with their arms extended this way, they will eventually get tired and give in. Next, it will be shown to students that you can simply begin to walk away from the wall(in the opposite direction of sin). Students will be taught that when they walk in the opposite direction and stop focusing on the wall they resist sin and temptation. It will be reinforced that the opposite direction represents prayer, fasting, Bible study, and recalling God's Word. A time when I was tempted as a teenager will be shared with the students, as well as the consequences. I will also give insight on dealing with temptation now that I am older and understand it differently.
Development:
Students will read out loud and discuss the story "Facing Temptation", the scripture passages and the scripture discussion. We will discuss briefly about the devil and his purpose as well as fasting and its purpose.
Practice:
Search The Scriptures 1. What was Jesus doing for 40 days and 40 nights, and how did He feel(Matthew 4:2)? 2. What was the first temptation and how dis Jesus respond(vv.3-4)? 3. What was the second temptation and how did Jesus respond(vv.5-7)? 4. What was the third temptation and how did Jesus respond(vv.8-10)? 5. What happened to Jesus after the devil left(v.11)?
Accommodations:
As thoughts come to students minds while the lesson is presented, students will be allowed to raise their hands and share thoughts/ask questions on the topic.
Checking For Understanding:
There will be a Q&A session. 1. We should never seek out temptation, but God will definitely allow it to come into our lives at times. What are the purposes of these temptations? 2. In all three temptations, Jesus used scripture to combat the devil. What does it take to use scripture effectively in our spiritual battles? Why is it important to view scripture in context, that is, to see the verses that surround individual Bible sound bites?
Closure:
Recapping the most important concepts that were covered in the lesson. Discussing how we can apply what we learned in our society. All around us today we are bombarded with sexually suggestive materials. We will talk about ideas from the following verses that can help us with this particular temptation: Philippians 4:8; Titus 2:1:8, 11-15;2 Timothy 2:24. Students will also be given daily Bible readings for this week on dealing with temptation.
Evaluation:
I will assess or measure student success in achieving the outcomes that I planned to reach by the questions asked and answered by students. As well as the participation and the visual attentiveness of students in the class session.
