Goals: | Students will learn to understand the similarities and differences between the life cycle of butterflies and frogs by integrating the second grade science, mathematics, and language arts curriculum |
Objectives: | Students will be listen and respond to familiar questions, greetings, and phrases if spoken very slowly, and distinctly, using one-word responses, physical actions, and other non-verbal communications to ask quetions to communicate basic needs and other social interacions with prompting and modeling (Maching objects, pointing to answer, or draw pictures). Student will understand and follow one-step and two-step directions and instructions. Student will understand simple words and phrases to express his/her ideas Student will listen and demostrate comprehension of oral presentations, stories, and familiar tests by responding to simple questions and statements. They will create artwork. Student will begin to speak with a few words, using some English phonemes and rudimentary English grammatical forms with propmting and modeling. They will read simple words and phrases representing learned vocabulary from a familiar reading selection. They will also respond correctly to yes/no questions on images, sounds, activities, and oral expressions using simple text. They will recognize 10-15 common words, including own name and environmental print such as commons signs, logos, and labels. They will able to draw and label pictures related to a story topic or own experience. |
Materials: | -Students will need art paper, crayons, second grade writing paper and pencils. -Teacher should prepare ahead of time a chart titled "Life Cycles" on which words will be listed as they are introduced in the lesson. -Poster or chart of the butterfly life cicle. -Picture flash cards of critical vocabulary words. -Computer with printer and internet hook-up. |

Accommodations: | The ELL will not be able to participate orally in the discussion. For this part of the assessment, provide pictures of the critical vocabulary and ask him/her to point to the picture that you name. You could use the flashcards, charts in the room or pictures in the books that have been used. Labeling the Frog Life Cycle. The ELL sould be expect to take the words from the critical vocabulary to use for this activity. Cooperative Work. Indicate how well the ELL worked with group members. Pictograph. In order for the ELL to participate in the discussion, show the ELL the pictographs and ask the ELL to point to the one with more butterflies/more frogs/fewer butterfloies/fewer frogs. Ask "How many butterflies/frogs are there? Life Cycle Lesson Questionaire. Read aloud the questions on the questionaire modifying orally which use vocabulary that was not a part of the critical vocabulary. |

Evaluation: | Give students a blank picture of the frog life cycle. Tell them to choose the words from the Life Cycle to label the diagram. Tell Students to also number in the correct order the stages of the Life Cicle. You may need to create your own diagram. Students will be expected to complete this with eight percent accuracy. Have students complete the Life Cycle worksheet. Use the Life Cycle Assessment as a tool for your evaluation. |
