Goals:
Upon Completion of this lesson the student will be able to: -Define Resource allocation and demonstrate undersatnding through practical exercise. -Define termininology - ACP, PCP, ACPP, First Responder, Duty Manager, Balanced Emergency Coverage(BEC) and be able to demonstrate through practical applications the utilization of specific resources and their movement and calls within a region.
Objectives:
Student will utilize mapping systems with vehicles and specific provider care levels to make concrete decisions on the way in which resources are allocated to specific calls. Students will be able to define and incorporate these definitions into real life scenario based testing.
Materials:
Large wall maps - approx 1 per group of 2 persons. Media projector.
Introduction:
To begin this lesson a large map will be placed on the whitebaord. With magnet backing 5 ambulances, 5 police cars and 5 fire trucks will be placed in the centre to provide coverage for the region stated. Students will them be asked to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a system such as this. After discussion of the advantages and disadvantages the students will them make suggestions as to what may be a better solution to the problem.
Development:
PowerPoint Lecture / Discussion What is Resource allocation? How does it apply to your suggestions for the aforementioned problem. (develop this through concrete definition and example) Review terminology PCP, ACP, ACPP, CCP, First Responder, Duty Manager - Query - What calls would these provider care levels be sent to?? On PP presentation give concrete examples after discussion. Balanced Emergency Coverage - discussion - in students own words definition - On PP presentation - concrete definition of Balanced Emergency Coverage. On mapping board show examples of how balanced emergency coverage works. Back up for calls - define the reasons for back up on emergency calls through discussion and determiniation of closest most appropriate units.
Practice:
Allow students to take time to orient themselves to map being used and provide examples to practice assigment of appropriate resources and providing balanced emergency coverage.
Accommodations:
When available utilize classroom maps and local areas that are unfamiliar to students to show change in exercises. Ensure students are rotated through the different call scenarios as to avoid redundancy and boredom.
Checking For Understanding:
All call packages handed out should have unit #'s specific to calls and local areas of units with bases. This will allow printable copies of call cards to be marked and evaluated to ensure student understanding. Request feedback from students as to the applicabilty of the lesson.
Closure:
Restore map to original state of 5 EMS, 5 police and 5 fire in middle of map and request students to come the map area and place units in appropriate locations - ensure understanding. Leave students with a thought - think of when you call 667-1111. Do you really want to drive all the way across town to p/u a pizza when you have a closer store avail only blocks away?
Evaluation:
Evaulate students work by requesting printed compies of calls.
