 Popular Culture, Racism, Social Status, Media, and the interrelated effects seen in our current timeline.
Goals:
 1. Understand the historical background of race relations and the impact of significant events in American history culminating in present perceptions of race and cultural differences and tolerances. 2. Understand the impacts of popular culture and the criminal justice system and their effects on each other.
Objectives:
 Students wil be able to: 1. Identify causes of tension between whites and black - before civil war - after civil war 2. Identify historical evidence of issues ralted to gender and race 3. Relate historical evidence to modern era and growth of racial tensions 4. Identify stereotypes and possible origins of stereotypes 5. Incoporate popular culture throughout 20th century, leading to current issues

 Televsion, Newspapers, Films and Cinema, Music
Introduction:
  - Introduction of Africans as slaves in America - American Civil War (views of whites and blacks in both the North and the South) - Formation of Klu Klux Klan (KKK) - Perpetuation of Racial tension and rise of Hate Groups - Race Riots - Assault and beating of Rodney King - Election of a Black President
Development:
  - Movies (in parts): 1."Birth of a Nation" 2."Glory" 3."American History X" 4."Philadelphia" 5."Men of Honor"
Practice:
 Class discussions on possible reasons for the rise in tensions and formation of stereotypes of different social groups.

 Race relations and social status are a product of societal views and reactions which structure the ever-changing climate of social groups and is perpetuated by popular culture viewed everyday through the media.
Evaluation:
 Class will be given an exam in essay format to check their understanding of the key elements of popular culture that influence social status and the key events in history that have led to the bias and tension between and among social entities.
