Goals: | - The learner will develop understanding of a Tree Map and when to use a Tree Map - The learner will work within a group to express ideas using speech or drawings to express themselves. - "Break the Ice" in the new school year. - Consider ideas for classroom improvement that may give the students some feelings of ownership. |
Objectives: | The learner will work within a group to create a Tree Map that illustrates (in word and pictures) suggestions for spending $50 to improve the ESL classroom |
Materials: | Post it notes; markets, large paper for tree maps |
Introduction: | Discussion on organization -- why we need it? what happens when we have it? what happens when we don't. Student share. |
Development: | Lead them from house to bedroom to clothes to dresser. Create Tree Map with class. Add all branches, then remove as students edit tree together. |
Practice: | Split class into teams. Each team need to come up with their own ideas about "How to Spend $50 in our Classroom." |
Accommodations: | Group accordingly by language levels. Limited language students can use the computer to find pictures. |
Checking For Understanding: | Discuss ways students can use tree maps in content classes. Discuss vocabulary words that teachers might use; categorize, organize, classify, etc. |
Closure: | Write down one example of when you might use a tree map in one of your classes. |
