Subject:

Topic:
 Stress
Content:
Eustress vs Distress or Good Sress vs Bad Stress
Goals:
Students will learn what stress is and understand that everyone experiences stress. They will begin to learn ways to reduce stress. This will help students handle stressful situations later on in life.
Objectives:
 1. Students will be able to determine the difference between eustress and distress by completing a worksheet, with 90% accuracy. 2. students will write down what they feel is the most stressful event in their life. 3. Students will make a brief statement to the class about the most stressful event in their life.
Materials:
 1. 12 " balloons for each student 2. Paper and Pencils for each student 3. Flip chart or blackboard and chalk
Introduction:
The teacher will describe stress and the difference between eustress and distress saying, "Everyone experiences stress! There are two types of Stress: Eustress: Positive, Good Stress. This kind of stress arises from situations that are enjoyable. (ex: winning a game doing well on a test)The other kind of stress is called distress. This is negative or Bad Stress. It can be harmful to the body. (ex: doing bad on a test, getting in a fight with a friend). Your body responds to both types of stress the same way!"
Development:
Ask the students write down the most stressful event that has occurred in their life. Allow time for students to share what they've written with the class.
Practice:
Give everyone in the class a balloon and tell the students you are going to teach them how to play the balloon game. . The counselor will call out different types of stressors (e.g. If the students feel it is a strong stressor, they will give a hard blow into the balloon. If the students feel it is a weak stressor, they will give an easy blow into the balloon. They will keep going until the balloon is ready to burst. Ask the students one by one to suggest a way to reduce stress. If the student suggests a healthy way to reduce stress (deep breathing, listening to music, coloring, exercising, punching a pillow) allow the student to let the air out of their balloon and fly away. If they suggest an unhealthy way to reduce stress (eg eating a candy bar, punching a friend) they must tie the balloon to see how stress can build up.
