Content: | This lesson requires students to use their knowledge of the food groups to plan a healthy meal. The meal needs to include an entree, at least one side dish, and beverage. |
Goals: | 1.The students will understand how the food pyramid can help to plan healthy meals. 2. Students will work in cooperative small groups. |
Objectives: | The students will use their knowledge of the food pyramid to plan a full meal that incorporates at least one serving of food from each group. The students will be able to classify their ingredients according to the food groups. |
Materials: | Copies of a sample menu,writing paper, construction paper, pencils, markers, crayons,Visual of the Food Pyramid |
Introduction: | 1.Divide students up in groups of 3 (8 groups) 2.Review the food groups with the students. 3.Tell the students that they are going to design a menu for one meal that includes at least one serving of food from each food group. 4.Students will have 50 minutes to complete the activity as a team. 5. A complete menu will have a picture of each food item, with the name, and the name of the dish. 6. The groups will elect one member to speak and they will present their menu in front of the class after lunch. |
Development: | The menu must include an entree, or main dish, at least one side dish, and a beverage. The requirements of the assignment have been written on the whiteboard.The students have a menu,a healthy food pyramid, and nutritional facts (this topic has been covered periodiaclly during the month)to refer to for inormation. 1.Pass out the sample menu located at the end of this lesson, and discuss it with the class. Does it meet the requirements? How? 2.Encourage the students to get creative with the assignment 3. Encourage students to work as a team. |

Checking For Understanding: | 1.Have the students write out which food group each ingredient in their menu belongs to. 2.Does each menu include at least 1 item from each of the food groups? 3. During oral presentations, assess the entire class by asking if the menu has all the requirements, and if not what is missing. |
Closure: | Allow each group 3-5 minutes to present their menus. *Groups who finish before the allotted time can work on the healthy foods word search. |
Evaluation: | The students have increased their knowledge of eating healthy, and learned how to work together. |
